To visa or not to visa, that is the question: วีซ่า ได้หรือไม่, นั่นคือคำถาม:

Well if you didn’t know I didn’t get a visa before leaving America, again. Not from lack of trying. When we were in New York we went to the Thai embassy but we needed my invitation letter to say that I was volunteering to teach English to have a better visa chance.  So we waited for an email from the school and never received it, so I knew God wanted to do it in Thailand. I’m ok with Him doing it where ever He wants to since He’s the one who does it, but oh this process eventually brings me to tears.

Thank God for the High school that we teach English at! They are so helpful with everything we need, whether it’s a work permit, visa, or even moving rock for our eventual daycare. The vice principal is right on the phone when we ask of him anything, such favor. The school has a nice van in which they’ve driven us to Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, and even Bangkok in this whole process. And they have paid for it all!

I got a 3 month visa from Laos three months ago. While getting that they suggested that I should get a work permit, even though I’m doing this voluntarily, so we go to Chaiyaphum about 3 times getting the right papers together to their liking, and 3000B ( $100) later we have it. It looks like a passport and if I don’t have it at the school with me at all times there could  a fine not exceeding 2000B and possible time in jail. J And now three months later it’s time for the year visa in Thailand. We’ve learned lessons by now about this process and have all or papers together, or so we thought. Khon Kaen is a little over 2 hours from our place, but with our driver it’s probably less than 2 hours J. The immigration officer says we have to have a teacher permit which we can only get from Bangkok, 5-6 hours away, again adjusted with his driving. This was on Nov 2, so on Nov 8^th we go to Bangkok. With a miss punch at the que it turns into a 5 hour wait. J All that and they don’t want any of my paperwork they just give me a letter because I’m a “special speaker”. Thailand is trying to push English in an ASEAN movement.

Great we have it and go to Khon Kaen the next day. We go to another officer but she’s never seen this letter from Bangkok so go to lunch and come back to see my boss. When we see the boss she says we need a letter from our school to them, see we have this letter but it’s to Bangkok, so we have to say to Khon Kaen immigration. Grrrr here is where I cry. Angel had specifically asked the first guy would this be all we needed, but here you go “I’m not sure why he said that.” This is Friday the 9^th so I wait until Monday the 12^th due day and go back again with this letter. We believe what they really want is more money from impatient or incapable people who do this process, but we do as they ask. We get yet another officer, officially using all their immigration officers by now, and he looks through the paper. Hearts beating, sweat pouring, could there be another rejection? No he gets his stamps lined up and boom boom stamp, glory! He tells us that if I lose the little paper he stapled inside my passport it’s a 2000B fine, but this is gold to me now I finally got it.   

And now  we go to Pattaya Praise to celebrate!!! Praise Your Name Lord. 

        ถ้าคุณไม่ทราบ ฉันไม่ได้วีซ่าตอนที่เดินทางจากอเมริกามาเมืองไทย อีกแล้ว ไม่ใช่ว่าไม่พยายามขอ ตอนที่เราอยู่ที่นิวยอร์กเราไปเดินเรื่องที่สถาทูตไทย แต่ฉันยังไม่มีจดหมายที่รับรองว่าฉันเป็นอาสาสมัครสอนภาษาอังกฤษซึ่งจะมีโอกาศได้วีซ่าง่ายขึ้น เรารออีเมลล์จากโรงเรียนก็หายเงียบ ฉันเลยรู้ว่าพระเจ้าอยากให้เราดำเนินการที่เมืองไทย ฉันไม่มีปัญหาที่จะให้พระเจ้าดำเนินการที่ไหนก็ตาม ซึ่งพระองค์จะเป็นคนจัดการให้อยู่แล้ว แต่การดำเนินการขอวีซ่าทำให้ฉันน้ำตาแตก

       ขอบคุณพระเจ้า สำหรับโรงเรียนที่เราสอนพวกเขาให้ความช่วยเหลืออย่างมาก กับทุกอย่างที่เราต้องใช้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นใบอนุญาตทำงานที่นี่ วีซ่า หรือแม้แต่ขอแรงขนก้อนหินเพื่อจะสร้างศูนย์เด็กเล็ก รองผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียนจัดการกดเบอร์โทรประสานงานทุกครั้งที่เราขอความช่วยเหลือทุกอย่าง สนับสนุนเราดีมาก โรงเรียนมีรถตู้คันใหญ่สะดวกสบายซึ่งคนขับรถจะไปส่งเราทุกที่เพื่อดำเนินการไม่ว่าจะเข้าเมืองชัยภูมิ ไปขอนแก่น หรือแม้แต่กรุงเทพฯ และโรงเรียนออกค่าใช้จ่ายให้หมด! อเมซิ่ง

       3 เดือนที่แล้วฉันได้วีซ่าจากสถานทูตไทยในลาว พอได้วีซ่าแล้วสถานทูตก็แนะนำให้ฉันขอใบอนุญาตทำงานถึงแม้ว่าฉันเป็นแค่อาสาสมัคร เราต้องเดินทางเข้าเมืองชัยภูมิ 3 ครั้ง เตรียมเอกสารที่เจ้าหน้าที่ต้องการให้พร้อมและจ่าย 3,000 บาท

(100 ดอลล่า) เราก็ได้ใบอนุญาตทำงานมาอยู่ในมือฉันหน้าตามันเหมือนหนังสือเดินทาง ถ้าไม่มีติดตัวตลอดเวลาที่สอนจะโดนปรับ 2,000 บาท หรือติดคุก ตอนนี้แหละเวลาผ่านไปแล้ว 3 เดือน ถึงเวลาต้องขอวีซ่าปีในเมืองไทย เราได้เรียนรู้มากมายในการดำเนินการครั้งนี้และมีเอกสารครบถ้วนอย่างที่เราเข้าใจ ไปขอนแก่นก็ประมาณ  2 ชั่วโมงกว่าๆ แต่คนขับเราเหาะไปไม่ถึง 2 ชั่วโมง  ที่ด่านตรวจคนเข้าเมืองเจ้าหน้าที่บอกว่าฉันต้องมีใบประกอบวิชาชีพสอน ซึ่งจะต้องไปเอาที่กรุงเทพฯเท่านั้น ก็ขับรถไปประมาณ 5-6 ชั่วโมง อีกแล้วคนขับจะพาเราเหาะไป ตอนวันที่ 2 พย. แล้ววันที่ 8 พย. เราต้องเดินทางไปกรุงเทพฯแล้ว ไปถึงที่ที่ต้องเอาใบประกอบวิชาชีพสอนเรากดบัตรคิวผิดช่องรอไปอีก 5 ชั่วโมง พอยื่นเอกสารเจ้าหน้าที่บอกว่าไม่ต้องใช้ แล้วก็ให้จดหมายที่บอกว่าฉันเป็น “วิทยากรพิเศษ” ประเทศไทยพยายามส่งเสริมให้คนไทยเรียนภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อเตรียมตัวเข้าสู่สมาคมอาเซี่ยน

        ตอนนี้เรามีเอกสารครบ วันต่อไปเราก็ไปขอนแก่น เข้าไปพบเจ้าหน้าที่อีกคน เจ้าหน้าที่บอกว่าทางหัวหน้าไม่เคยได้รับจดหมายแจ้งจากกรุงเทพฯเรื่อง วิทยากรพิเศษเลย แล้วให้เราไปทานข้าวและกลับมาใหม่ตอนบ่ายโมงเพื่อพบร้อยเอก(นายใหญ่) พอเราเข้าพบร้อยเอกกลับบอกเราว่าต้องมีจดหมายอีกฉบับจากโรงเรียน จดหมายที่เรามีมันเรียนถึงที่อื่นไม่ใช่ ร้องถึงด่านตรวจคนเข้าเมืองขอนแก่น ฉันปี่แตกเลย ร้องโฮ แองเจิ้ลถามเจ้าหน้าที่ครบถ้วนแล้วเมื่อครั้งแรกว่าเอกสารเราครบ นี่เป็นวันศุกร์ที่ 9  ฉันต้องรอจนถึงวันสุดท้ายที่วีซ่าหมดอายุคือ วันจันทร์ที่ 12 และต้องกลับมาอีกรอบพร้อมจดหมายอีกฉบับ จริงๆเขาต้องการเงินเพิ่มจากฝรั่งที่ไม่ชอบรอและไม่สามารถดำเนินการเอกสารโน่นนี่นั่นได้ แต่เราก็ไปหาเอกสารมาอย่างที่เจ้าหน้าที่ต้องการ เราได้พบเจ้าหน้าที่ทุกคนที่รับเอกสารข้างหน้าจนไปถึงนายใหญ่ แล้วเจ้าหน้าที่คนสุดท้ายก็พิจารณาเอกสารเรา ใจฉันเต้นแรงมาก เหงื่อแตก ฉันจะถูกปฎิเสธอีกไหม ไม่เลยเจ้าหน้าที่เตรียมตราประทับและ ตึง! ตึ่ง! สรรเสริญพระเจ้า เจ้าหน้าที่บอกว่ากระดาษที่ประทับตราให้ในหนังสือเดินทางห้ามหายเด็ดขาดเพราะจะถูกปรับ 2,000 บาท สำหรับฉันกระดาษใบนี้มีค่ายิ่งกว่าทองคำ ฉันได้วีซ่าแล้ว!
