Will Work For Peanuts: ขุดถั่วหามัน

Did you know peanuts grow underground? I didn’t until Angel’s sister decided we should help them pick peanuts on the farm because they do not want to pay for workers. It had rained all night and I thought, thank God it will be too wet to go, but no turns out it’s perfect to pull them up. Oih.  They are over grown with grasses and I couldn’t have told you peanuts were there, but P Lo shows me what to do- how to pull them. They have mercy on me and let me pick the peanuts off the clumps and put them in the bucket. We work for peanuts; as in nothing; but they do get a woman who literally works for peanuts. She’s a peanut picking fool and I can’t keep up with her. It’s so muddy that by lunch she took her gloves and shoes off. My pants are falling down now because I’ve lost some weight, so this gets interesting. They laugh at me because I can’t squat down for hours, not even minutes, like they can. They ask don’t I have squatty potties in America? No and most of us don’t squat like that. My knees can’t take it yet; they could go all day. But this is far easier work then cutting down the trees on our part of the property! No red ants, no thorns.

I’ll never open a jar of peanuts, with their different roasted flavors, the same again. J And to think woman pay people to put this mud on them. I am not a falang for a day I am a dark Thai. 

คุณรู้ไหมว่าถั่วลิสงเกิดใต้พื้นดิน ? ฉันไม่รู้จนพี่สาวแองเจิ้ลขอให้เราช่วยไปเก็บถั่วในไร่เพราะพวกเขาไม่อยากจ้างคนงาน คืนก่อนที่เราจะไปเก็บฝนตกทั้งคืน ขอบคุณพระเจ้าคงจะแฉะเกินไป แต่กลายเป็นว่าดีดินจะได้เปียกดึงต้นถั่วง่ายๆ โอ้ย  ไร่ถั่วมีหญ้าขึ้นเต็มจนมองไม่เห็นต้นถั่ว พี่โล่พี่เขยแองเจิ้ลหาต้นถั่วและสอนฉัน พวกเขาช่วยฉันโดยไม่ต้องหาและตึงต้นถั่วแค่เก็บมันออกจากรากใส่ถัง เราเก็บถั่วให้ฟรีเพราะเป็นของครอบครัว แต่มีป้าคนหนึ่งที่เกิดมาหาถั่วจริงๆหาไวมาก ถอนต้นขึ้นๆ จนฉันเก็บไม่ทัน ดินเละจนเป็นโคลนได้ครึ่งวันป้าแกเลยถอดถุงมือซะเลย กางเกงฉันก็หลวมหลุดเอวเพราะน้ำหนักลดมาก สิ่งประหลาดคือ พวกเขาหัวเราะฉันเพราะฉันนั่งยองๆนานไม่ได้ แป๊บเดียวก็ไม่ได้ไม่เหมือนพวกเขา พวกเขาถามฉันว่าไม่มีส้วมแบบนั่งยองๆหรือทีอเมริกา? ไม่มี และคนอเมริกาก็ไม่ปลดทุกข์แบบนั่งยองๆด้วย หัวเข่าฉันยังไม่ชิน มันยังไม่แข็งแรงพอที่จะนั่งยองๆทั้งวัน แต่เก็บถั่วเป็นงานเบามากเมื่อเทียบกับถางป่ารกในไร่ของเรา อย่างน้อยก็ไม่มีมดแดงและหนาม

ฉันจะไม่เปิดเนยถั่วขวดใหม่เด็ดขาดถ้าขวดเก่าไม่หมด และฉันคิดถึงในสปาที่เขาจ้างคนเอาขี้โคลนมาทาตัวเอง ฉันขอไม่เป็นฝรั่งสักวันแต่เป็นคนไทยผิวคล้ำๆสวยกว่า
